Agatha is Dead!
Every now and then we come across bands that look back on times long past with mixed feelings – yet make those times feel as tangibly real as a scent caught unexpectedly. Anyone who was a teenager in the early eighties is likely to experience these and similar surges of emotion when listening to Agatha Is Dead! The Berlin quartet plays beautifully crafted post-punk in the tradition of The Cure, Euroshima or Joy Division, and just a few months after the band was formed during the Covid winter of 2021, they’re already turning heads one after another on the capital’s underground scene. Songs imbued with the wine-red romanticism of ‘I Called And Left A Message’ or ‘Begs Me To Dance’ (2022) make it clear why post-punk had such a massive impact on millions of lives during the eighties. Sleek guitar lines over erotic effects, deeply murmuring vocals, precisely contrasted drums – this band has grasped how the sound design of that era can be authentically transposed into the present. Their latest single “Courtroom Drama” (2026) proves it too: post-punk is back – and Agatha Is Dead! are right at the forefront of this revival.
