Big Special
An entire decade of corruption, neoliberal propaganda and the dismantling of social security systems has left British youngsters with plenty of reasons to rebel. But what has disastrous consequences for society is fertile ground for post-punk bands like Big Special, their songs giving a lost and betrayed generation a cultural framework for their anger and lack of prospects that almost seemed lost. The fact that the duo's 2024 album ‘Postindustrial Hometown Blues’ manages to take an unflinching look at the status quo in the UK is down in no small part to their bluesy grooves, biting spoken-word lyrics and a knack for unlikely instrumentation. Add to this their anthem-like singalongs, and you have their big, very special signature sound – ready for another shirt-soaked gig in Hamburg.
