The Homesick
Flitting between blossoming harmonies and edgy punk sections that occasionally catch you off guard from the background, The Homesick switch gears with playful ease, often enough within the very same song. Whilst their debut, “Youth Hunt” (2017), was a mystical cross between post-punk and noise pop, their stylistic repertoire was expanded with tremendous experimental fervour on the follow-up, “The Big Exercise” (2020). Suddenly, 1969-style math rock and psychedelic pop, indie and artsy pedal antics were no problem at all; they were even integrated as if this West Frisian trio had been doing nothing else. Reminiscences of Animal Collective and The Shins but also of XTC and Vampire Weekend shine through here and there. The fact that The Homesick nevertheless undoubtedly do their own thing is demonstrated with captivating ease on their third album, which was released almost exactly three years ago. Since then, they have been a celebrated force even outside of the Netherlands when it comes to thoroughly idiosyncratic, new-school anti-pop. For their first gig here in September, they’ll be bringing along a medley of fresh material alongside their latest single, “Esperanto” (2026). Don’t miss it.
