Sound as a living thing, as something that develops organically, that needs to be given time and space – Martyna Basta has understood this better than any other contemporary Polish composer. Following the structural approaches of the early pioneers of minimal music, this classically trained guitarist fuses individual melodic fragments, acousmatic sound sources and dissonant harmonies into auditory experiences that transcend traditional concepts. On her albums “Making Eye Contact With Solitude” (2021) and the outstanding “Slowly Forgetting, Barely Remembering” (2023), Basta weaves together layers of electroacoustic sound textures to conjure atmospheres ranging from the sacred and ethereal to the menacing and ominous. There are nods to La Monte Young, Charlotte Moorman and Moondog. Ambient and field recordings, lowercase music and a sensual ASMR repertoire set the stage for a mental cinema in monochrome colours that exert an irresistible pull. On her new album “Winged In Collapse” (2026), the soundtrack of downfall and resurrection assumes chamber-orchestral qualities, whilst also showing how masterfully Martyna Basta puts her microtonal visions into practice, defying all contemporary trends.
