Nell Mescal
With her debut EP ‘Can I Miss It For A Minute?’ (2024) from last year, Nell Mescal showed an impressive feel for soulful, catchy songwriting against a backdrop of an all-pervasive FOMO paranoia. Because it's not just Gen Z who are plagued by the fear of missing out and being left behind - older generations have unfortunately also absorbed this all too quickly. Mescal speaks on a personal level about the issues and realities that mainstream pop tends to skate over in favour of trivial calendar-slogan speak. As she puts it, her aim is to encourage reflection through her songs, create a sense of connection rather than simply to entertain. But hope also radiates through in ballad-like songs like ‘Killing Time’ or ‘July’, where the vocally versatile Irish singer-songwriter opens up her soul, offering valuable insights into the setbacks of interpersonal relationships and the pitfalls of living in the confusing world of today.
