Carsten Wagner | Deep Talk
Carsten Wagner is a contemporary artist, a native of Hamburg, and self-taught. After leaving school early and experiencing a higher education system that dismissed him as “talentless”, he embarked on a technical career. He worked in the IT sector for 15 years and learnt the traditional craft of his father, a graphic designer and master typesetter. Today, Wagner’s body of work encompasses sculpture, painting, and printmaking. The latter two crafts in particular bridge the visual, physical, and electronic worlds, exploring organic structures and multi-layered textures. Wagner translates these two-dimensional works into three-dimensional form through his interactive sculptures. This gives rise to dynamic soundscapes that respond to human contact and physical movement. Wagner explores subculture, human longings, and transience. By deconstructing the technology he employs – be it printmaking or electronics – he creates a raw, deeply personal artistic language.
