Billy Nomates

Music / Punk / United Kingdom

Billy Nomates has got it made. From her 2020 self-titled debut, to singles and various live performances across Europe, to collaborations with Sleaford Mods and praise from Iggy Pop – the British post-punker has ticked off all that can be achieved with an anti-capitalist working class attitude in England and in the times we’re living in. Of course, this doesn’t mean her story has come to an end. Far from it: Nomates continues to hurtle towards the future at full throttle, giving the finger to the temptations of the industry, on conforming and raking in the cash. Comparisons with Chrissie Hyde, Nick Cave or Thurston Moore therefore unsurprisingly crop up, but overlook the Leicester-born musician’s own style. Rather than being a copy of any icons, she is more laid-back, confident and independent – something she makes clear with her new song material.
