Denise Chaila

Music / Hip-Hop/Rap / Ireland

Denise Chaila has had many different labels applied to her: poet and feminist, rapper and R'n'B singer, Zambian and Irish. One thing’s certain, though: this hungry artist has been a solid force in the British-Irish music underground for years doing her own thing on a multitude of levels. Afrobeat and grime, conscious and southern rap à la Missy Elliot – Chaila has taken these cues from these and slapped them onto unconventional beats, hitting a perfect and rare balance between danceable and mysterious on her debut “Go Bravely” (2020). Whether BBC Radio 6, Other Voices, or as the opening act for Ed Sheeran: ever since her debut was named Album of the Year at the Irish Choice Awards, this powerhouse of a woman has been a symbol of female presence for Ireland's hip-hop scene far beyond the borders of her hometown Limerick and she has been taking well-deserved credit for it.
