District Five

Music / Indie, Jazz / Switzerland

Presented by: Swiss Music Export

Freed from the straitjacket of genre-specific conventions, District Five make music with no name which is hard to grasp. Those who try quickly find themselves juggling with somewhat offbeat styles: jazz fusion, art rock, electronica, post-punk, film music and glittering improvisations have already been blended by the Zurich quartet on this year’s debut “Burnt Sugar” into a highly intriguing amalgam that works just as well with headphones as it does in smoky dives on the outskirts of town. Sensing the unexpected behind every bridge, behind every tonal transit, is such a treat for all those after fresh ideas and breaks with the mainstream. More elusive than ever in the streaming age, it’s these very breaks that are the hallmark in the District Five sound as a whole, but also in every single piece this bunch have produced so far. From now on, everyone from jazz or avant-garde fans and beyond needs this foursome on their radar. Their Reeperbahn premiere definitely promises great things.
