We are living in freakish times. Major upheaval follows radical disruption, changes are sweeping across the planet in ever greater waves, leaving question marks everywhere you look. In view of this, the music of Asia and Chris Dexter Greenspan, who is already active as Witch house pioneer oOoOO, provides stylistically confident auditory answers in order to somehow be able to put the whole chaos into perspective internally. In the spirit of Tindersticks or Portishead, the duo Drab City moves between Dream Pop and Trip Hop, including a Hauntology filter - in other words, everything is dimly lit, surreal, but somehow also damn beautiful. Flute and vibraphone cozy up to broken beats and deadpan vocals, and the DIY aesthetic is underpinned by a production with the potential to send the imagination wild. The debut album “Good Songs For Bad People”, released last year on the Bella Union label, is thus the perfect accompaniment on the way to a post-Covid world in which we all reflect in disillusionment on what makes life really worth living.
