Maarja Nuut

Music / Contemporary, Electronic/Live / Estonia

Presented by: Keychange

Urban air liberates the mind? That was true once upon a time. Today, though, we should be saying that it’s the country air that liberates. Free from trends, free from being a follower, from the never-ending banal uniformity. Estonian Maarja Nuut grasped this right at the beginning of her unique career, when she translated the centuries-old village music of her homeland into incredibly captivating compositions for the here and now on her debut EP "Soolo" (2013). It didn’t take long for the trained violinist to find a creative partner in Hendrik Kalijujärv aka Ruum, who turned out to be the perfect complement for her auditory visions. On the breathtaking albums "Muunduja" (2018) and "World Inverted" (2020), the two create sublime maelstroms of Estonian folk music, avant-folk and electro-acoustic psychedelia that are unrivalled in contemporary European music. Experimental tradition and classical modernity, the breath of nature and the puff of civilisation tentatively marry here to create music that should be seen as an invitation to another world. Return tickets sold out. At Reeperbahn Festival, Maarja Nuut will now present her third solo album 'Hinged'.
