Music / R'n'B/Soul / Germany

Presented by: popNRW

A self-declared nomad, Mariama has traveled far and wide both geographically and musically: Born in Sierra Leone, the singer, songwriter and producer grew up in Cologne, where she sang in choirs and musicals form an early age, but also composed songs on her mother’s guitar. Through her mentor Adé Bantu, she got to know the big names of the German rap scene, working with Curse, Sisters Keepers and Brothers Keepers, before recording her 2012 solo debut The Easy Way Out in France, where it went on to become an surprise success. The talented musician’s sophomore work Love, Sweat and Tears was yet another collection of cleverly produced neo soul tracks, inspired by Afrofuturism, contemporary R'n'B, folk and pop. And the album’s name certainly seems fitting: Mariama deals with the bitter as well as the sweet moments in life, facing loneliness, sadness and a lack of direction on “Raindrops”, but finding a more hopeful note on the flowing and grooving “Coffee and Wine”. Sounds to accompany us through life.
