1000 Rabbits
Just like 1000 Rabbits, plenty of other bands could well be starting out: playing a few dozen gigs to begin with, finding their own sound, writing songs and letting them develop. And then: BAM! “Virgin Soil” brought a smile to the faces of indie connoisseurs not just in the UK at the start of the year. Rhythmically sophisticated yet cleverly embellished with violin lines, textures of sparse synths and guitars, and vocals that oscillate between intimacy and urgency, 1000 Rabbits have sent the cult-favourite London Windmill scene into a frenzy. The sound of this five-piece band celebrates the contradiction of controlled loss of control; it is both thoughtful and open – somewhere between indie pop, art rock, a Canterbury touch and jazz fusion. Both in their songwriting and on stage, an impetuous desire to experiment and embrace the unconventional comes to the fore, enveloping the band enigmatically like a mist. Their concert here in Hamburg promises to be just as unpredictable.
