Abekejser
Stable beat structures onto which powerful melodies and experimental jazz harmonies are mounted stem from the blueprint for Abekejser’s contemporary sound, which defies predictability. The quartet from Aarhus, Denmark, began synthesising this kaleidoscope of styles over half a decade ago and from the outset have possessed the necessary courage and skill to refuse to bow to the streaming gods. Nevertheless – or perhaps because of this – albums such as their debut, ‘Floating Through The Universe’ (2019), and the ultra-groovy follow-up, ‘Blueprint’ (2021), have become true gems of Danish nu jazz, which is celebrated by more than only underground aficionados. A dash of shimmering 1985 synth funk, arrangements from the heyday of smooth jazz, and silicone-based timbres that lie somewhere between progressive electronic and instrumental hip-hop make this cocktail a smooth delight without any signs of wear and tear. Live, it’s a feast for the senses.
