For Anna Ullrich, the latter’s the only way, which is why she’s bringing a rethink to the European techno scene as a DJ and producer, evoking the spirit of the 90s. Between childlike, freaked-out trance and the minimalist techno beats of back then, the Viennese native has a style that screams change and radical new directions. Whatever’s happened, whatever others claim is to come: unfailing optimism is the order of the day and can - nay, must - be celebrated with your heart, mind and every fibre of your body. And when you hear tracks like the nostalgic and yet wonderfully upbeat “Wir haben Spaß und ihr nicht” (2023) or the lyrical “Sommernacht” (2024), you just can’t resist. On her new single “If I Could” (2025), Anna Ullrich shows that she can fuse energetic BPMs with a sound that hits the longing note too, with great melodies and brilliant production quality.
