The whiff of vanished dreams and bitter realities has not yet disappeared from the Hamburg school when Dennis Kiss slowly makes his way through the room. His breathing becomes deep and long, the confrontation with the fears of adolescent life appears inevitable. Uncertainty hangs in the air. With his debut album Norddeich Mole (2024), the Swiss artist released a gem of contemporary indie prose late last year that has won him many fans, from Sportfreunde Stiller to Rolling Stone and Schall magazine. The lyrics are existential and introspective, the guitars driving yet somehow sad, the energy unwavering against all odds. Thoughtful tracks such as ‘Kiezmond’ and ‘Tekken 4’ are the soundtrack to urban life in the desert of modern reality, where prospects are dwindling but giving up isn’t an option. In the spirit of Camus: accepting and celebrating the absurdity of Western existence, but still drawing strength from the certainty that we can still take matters into our own hands. Dennis Kiss thus positions himself as a newcomer to German indie rock – and perhaps its saviour.
