Ebbb
Ebbb’s music had already been described as a quasi-religious experience before the three Brits from London’s underground scene even dropped their first EP. With an enrapturing atmosphere of dull, booming beats, synaesthetic indietronica, and art-pop influences, the project creates sacred sound sculptures that defy any conventional description. The falsetto of singer Will Rowland hovers over each of these productions, which could accompany the end of the world as well as the beginning of a new era of humanity. His voice is sometimes distorted, sometimes presented in all its vocal variance. As part of London’s vibrant Windmill scene, which has formed around the pub of the same name in Brixton and also includes bands such as black midi, Squid, and Black Country, New Road, Ebbb are interested in a consistent disruption of traditional songwriting. Songs such as ‘Himmel’ and the strangely beautiful ‘Answered’ create mental imagery that is both moving and unsettling. This can be experienced on the group’s debut EP, ‘All At Once’, which was released last year via Ninja Tune and has critics all over the UK doing somersaults. And rightly so, as becomes increasingly clear on the first, second, and third listen. According to reports, they also sound incredible live.
