Things always seem to turn out differently than expected: Originally, after completing his studies in music production, Jonas Hipper wanted to work primarily as a beat maker in the background, providing others with tracks and devoting himself to his own art in peace. After working with artists such as 2lade, Carlo5, and Tigermilch and honing his craft, however, the native Swabian and Cologne resident was inevitably drawn into the spotlight. His first singles – ‘Es ist spät’ and ‘ich brenn für dich’ – hint at where the journey is headed: deep into the madness of the big city, armed with mirrors, cigarettes, and a knack for sophisticated beat work. This is neither simply pop nor indie, neither lo-fi nor highlife, neither bedroom nor rooftop terrace – it is somewhere in between. And all the while, frytz leans back with a cigarette, going his own way at his own pace. Accordingly, his debut EP, ‘Unter meiner Haut’ (2024), also features a soundtrack that is both relaxed and haunting, reflecting the undiscovered and subliminal poetry of everyday urban scenarios.
