Sophie Payten had barely been professionally active as a musician for a year when she was celebrated as ‘Unearthed Artist Of The Year’ in 2015. Soon, she was booked for concerts all over Australia, all while she was supposed to be devoting time to her medical studies. So be it. Down Under, her debut EP, ‘Clever Disguise’ (2016), shot straight into the most important playlists for indie, art pop, and singer–songwriter – three vague labels that at best give a broad idea of her sound. That’s because what Payten creates under her pseudonym, Gordi, is a constantly changing collage of inspirations and original ideas, which she then moulds into various forms with stylistically confident elegance on a series of albums. Her debut, ‘Reservoir’ (2017) – which was also celebrated outside of the English-speaking world – was followed at short intervals by the EP ‘Beneath The Reservoir’ (2019) and her second album, ‘Our Two Skins’ (2020), with which Gordi finally proved herself to be one of the great pop reformers of her generation: By then, she had already won every major award on her home continent. Now, ‘Like Plasticine’ (2025) – her third and most personal studio album to date – will be released and presented for the first time here in Germany.
