Jamaica Moana plays their cards relentlessly across multiple disciplines, revealing one ace after another. As a non-binary musician, creative director, model, and ambassador for their Māori community (Ngāpuhi/Tainui), they have established themself for years as a media phenomenon in Australia and impressively demonstrate that the cultural melting pot of the First Nations Down Under represents a rich musical treasure trove just waiting to be unearthed. In their music, Jamaica achieves precisely this when they playfully channel rap and R&B, soul and archaic energies into tracks of the calibre of “Just Like This” (2019) and “Tuggawar” (2025). Sweat-inducing and physical, lustful and sensual, this sound compels you to dance, to celebrate, to laugh. Last year saw the release of “Bud & Deni” (2025), the eagerly awaited debut EP from this dazzling jack-of-all-trades, with which they position themself somewhere between a futuristic reinterpretation of Missy Elliott and their own West Coast hip-hop influences from their childhood. So, it’s high time that the prominent leader of the Australian ballroom scene finally came to visit us here in Hamburg.
