There is often a particular artistic appeal in achieving as much as possible with as little as possible. In the indie scene in particular, many strive for this, yet few achieve a similar sonic and narrative depth to Lowertown with the standard band setup of guitars, drums, and vocals. On paper, indie and folk, slacker rock and bedroom pop come together here in a delightfully surreal way – but to the ear, the whole becomes much more than the sum of its genre-specific parts. That’s because the Atlanta-based duo create a highly idiosyncratic sound that combines introspective lyrics with lo-fi production qualities and a keen instinct for sublime drama that feels both reflective and deeply human. As a result, releases such as the highly acclaimed EP “The Gaping Mouth” (2021) and their cryptic-sounding debut album, “I Love To Live” (2022), embody the aesthetics of bizarre dreams, of faded childhood memories where a clear image is triggered by the right smell, taste, or sound. At times, it sounds downright relaxed and secure; the next moment, it’s like a stream of consciousness in post-punk mode. With their second album, “Ugly Duckling Union” (2026), they consequently present us with what is perhaps this year’s most fitting soundtrack for a world lost in total contradictions.
