Magdalene Baehr creates a thoroughly unconventional journey back into recent music history on her first two singles, which she promptly placed on Warner Music. Blessed with six-figure streaming numbers right off the bat, the ballad-like ‘Brich mich’ sounds like a mixture of chanson, empowerment anthem, and contemporary indie pop surprise. But that’s exactly what Magda is, having appeared on Austria’s music scene this year and having been quick to enjoy great popularity across all generations. Her second single, ‘Wandrisse’, is also immediately compelling with its delicate tempo shifts and self-contained chord dramaturgy, but it also demonstrates how compositional understatement can pay off and prove its worth in times of increasingly shrill pop music. What is particularly fascinating is that the actress and violinist sounds like an experienced singer–songwriter without airs and graces, although apart from her two singles, hardly anything of hers has been released yet.
