While some fall apart over the end of a romantic relationship, others use it as a chance to grow. When Mary Middlefield was dumped by her boyfriend in spring 2020, she thought all was lost at first. Reluctant to just take the loss sitting down, the trained violinist set about channelling it into emotionally powerful songs. The debut album ‘Thank You Alexander’ (2023) is not just a personal liberation, it also signalled the start of her music career. Since then, it’s only gone in one direction: straight up. On top of rave reviews from BBC Radio 6 to The Line Of Best Fit and Clash, the Swiss singer’s fanbase has also grown rapidly over the past few years. Performances at the Glastonbury Festival and the Summer Olympics in Paris 2024 finally opened the door to the big international stages, but also established her as an independent artist with a vision. With her second album “Poetry (For The Scorned And Lonely)” (2024), she proved once again last year that this vision is long-term and involves well-conceived changes, to the acclaim of the international music press. We can expect nothing less from her concert here in September.
