A prudent cry for help, a little reminder that we all need love and magic and should not take things for granted – that’s how Melanie Danuser herself describes her trusting style of folk nuances, indie production, and pop, which is characterised by a very special understatement. The Zurich-based singer–songwriter knows how to formulate her poetry and set it to music in a way that is deeply moving without sounding cheesy, thereby opening up new perspectives on classic indie tropes. Tracks such as ‘Bring The Witches Back’ – which resembles a lost childhood memory – and the summery, reduced ‘Soft’ are characterised by an unmistakable sound language for which Mel D is so highly valued by her audience. Last year saw the release of her first EP, ‘Not Crazy’, which impressively demonstrates that the high expectations placed on her were not only justified, but also fulfilled one hundred per cent.
