Pem
Even the teachers at her primary school were always asking her parents if she smoked. Pem’s husky, fluted vibrato voice already stood out back then and meant she could cover songs by the greats at the tender age of 13. She went on to perform at open mic nights, where she developed her performance style. Elliott Smith and Laura Marling were her inspiration when she started vocalising ideas and taking notes for her own songs while working as a gardener. Her dedication to her craft shines through in her self-taught guitar skills as well as in her unconventional songwriting, giving her releases a personalised style in the best DIY mould. While “Songs About Hands” (2022) already showed Pem’s minimalist folk sensibility, this was carefully expanded on her second EP “Cloud Work” (2024). These are songs of great intimacy, featuring Pem processing the death of her father and delving into the heart of things with her shivering vocals. It’s rare to hear existential themes packaged in such humble and wonderfully contemplative songs that touch us and inspire us to reflect - whether at home on our headphones or live on stage. One thing you’ll need to bring for her gig with us are your tissues.
