Robert Stad­lo­ber

Robert Stadlober’s unconventional career has enjoyed highlights aplenty on the German cultural scene since the turn of the millennium. As an actor and audio book narrator, dubbing artist and label owner, but primarily as a singer and multi-instrumentalist, he’s graced all corners of the local media landscape over the years, with his ever-adventurous and confident style. He regularly releases albums with bands Gary and Escorial Gruen, goes on tour and plays guitar, harmonica and trumpet. Alongside his ambitions as a rock musician and performer in various national and international productions, he’s also been focussing on setting lyrical texts by writers such as Stefan Heym and Kurt Tucholsky to music for a few years now. His album ‘Wenn wir einmal nicht grausam sind, dann glauben wir gleich, wir seien gut’ (2024) is a particularly affectionate collection of trenchant indie pop numbers reminiscent of the Hamburger Schule and Element Of Crime and with echoes of Leonard Cohen and Gerhard Schöne. Once again he takes the limelight with eloquence and stubbornness, once again with cultural relevance, once again with his own headstrongness, bucking the zeitgeist. Seeing him live on stage is a special experience, especially in the times we’re in.
