Widersacher aller Liedermacher
Undeterred by the trials and tribulations of the world, Matthias Wolf and his adversaries dance through the German-language music landscape – and have been doing so for years. Their sound is as traditional as it is fresh, as satirical as it is tongue-in-cheek. The bandleader and founder knows how to differentiate meaning with language, singing mainly in the Upper Palatinate dialect and juggling clever onomatopoeias that reveal a keen sense for the layers of meaning in words. The group’s debut album, ‘Die Bris’ (2020), was enough to make the eclectic mishmash of songwriting adversaries famous, at least locally: Cheeky folk meets edgy double basses, rough rock meets whispering saxophones, jazz and hip-hop meet powerful drums and an undeniable 60s vibe. No wonder they always play to a loyal audience of fans in the dive bars of Germany – fans who expect the full programme, both musically and lyrically, and of course get it. Their second album, ‘As Weda’ (2024), was released last year and follows the style of the cheeky crossover band with verve and unwavering consistency. So, it’s high time they finally came to us.
