Regulation, Revenue, Repertoire – How To Be A Fair And Truly Global One-Billion-Subscriber Business
It looks as though the music streaming industry might soon celebrate its billionth music subscriber. This is a significant milestone, and the overall figures look excellent.
Yet, clearly, not everyone involved feels they are receiving their fair share; artists, in particular, often seem to come up short financially.
Also many small and medium-sized labels—whose work in developing artists is integral to the music industry’s ongoing success story— report declining revenues, with platforms, the investment market, and shareholders appearing to be profiting disproportionately on the other side.
While some artists (and companies) fare super-well in this system, some others don’t. There are countries / regions in the world where artists and their music could thrive more.
And then there’s the increased volume of AI generated music flooding the digital music services, as culturally alarming as it is diminishing the potential revenues for artists.
So, what paths lead to a future that secures the industry's success while ensuring everyone entitled receives a fair share of the earnings, ensuring cultural diversity and fair remuneration for authors?
