Carlos Cipa

Music / Contemporary, Classical / Munich, Germany

Thanks to his haunting journeys to the heart of contemporary piano music, classically-inclined listeners have come to celebrate Carlos Cipa as a poet of the keys in recent years. While certainly imbued with emotionality, his albums are carefully balanced and to some extent more physical, perhaps even more focused than the sound of fellow modern-day virtuosos such as Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm.

Cipa's style is reminiscent of the minimalism of Erik Satie, who was similarly interested in delicate calibrations of melody and harmony. On his latest album Retronyms, released on Warner Classics on 23 August, he cleverly enhances his sound spectrum with new electronic touches. At Reeperbahn Festival, film fan Cipa is sure to create a cinematic atmosphere—and bring tears to many an eye.
