Tourist brochures with slightly more creative authors call Wuppertal in western Germany the country's San Francisco. Whether true or not, the city hasn't sounded this great since the late seventies. The music of Darjeeling with its psychedelic guitar effects and deep bass grooves generates automatic comparisons with early Pink Floyd, late Beatles, or a younger version of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

But the band, which has grown from a three- to a four-piece, has always had audible ambitions to create innovative and contemporary music. Melodies and instrumental harmony always come first, before the band weaves everything into compositions that shimmer with a thousand facets. Their debut Life Is an Intriguing Mosaique of Revealing Secrets was already an album on a whole new level, and this year's sophomore record Hokus Pokus holds that level at the very least.
