Daughters of Reykjavík

Music / Hip-Hop/Rap / Reykjavík, Iceland

It would be too simple to reduce Reykjavíkurdætur to the superficial: nine women who rap in Icelandic to fresh trap beats and who reject all the conventional trappings of the music industry. But why would anyone reduce them, when there is so much more to say? The Daughters of Reykjavik are more than the personification of a defiant rejection of patriarchy, of petrified conventions – whether in the context of language, sex, politics, or culture. After their debut RVK DTR, which was fully financed through crowdfunding, their sophomore effort Soft Spot reveals the expectations of the hip hop scene as utterly obsolete. Those who are stuck in the past will have to put on some extra layers to keep warm in this ice storm – because here comes female confidence unlike anything the industry has ever seen before.
