Joy Crookes
Music / R'n'B/Soul, Singer-Songwriter / London, United Kingdom
With a trio of extraordinary soul EPs in the late 2010s, Joy Crookes, then barely of legal age, made a name for herself and showed how capable of applying her self-taught musical skills she already was. Guitar, bass, piano – the multi-talented South-Londoner taught herself everything she knows. Blessed by a velvety soft voice, songs like "Since I Left You" or the longingly grooving "Feet Don't Fail Me" quickly saw great success - UK Music Video Awards included. At the end of 2021, her debut album "Skin" was released, with which Crookes set a monument not only to herself but to neo-soul in general: modern production emulates a vintage sound that hasn’t been seen in this form since Amy Winehouse. Influences from R&B to pop, to hip-hop and smooth jazz are delicately interwoven, while the young singer-songwriter’s timbre easily moulds into any musical form or colour. The fact that the UK has come to tout her as the great hope for soul should surprise no-one at this point.
