Kai Schumacher

Music / Contemporary, Classical / Germany

Presented by: Neue Meister

Kai Schumacher brings the piano into the 21st century as the bridge between the various worlds of music—and plays it—more successfully than most. In the mid-nineties, at age 15, he had his debut with Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2. After high school, the natural studied piano under Till Engel in Essen and graduated with honors in 2009. Ever since, Schumacher has dedicated himself to American piano music of the 20th and 21st centuries, and rearranged grunge, heavy metal, and indie rock for the piano. Oh, and then there was his stint as a multi-instrumentalist for the folk pop band Mobilée.

But his repertoire also encompasses ambient, techno, and successful covers such as the Moderat song "New Error". Clearly the artist, along with his creativity, knows no bounds or conventions. And what good would that do? Instead, Schumacher always seeks to bring past and present together in an intimate embrace and finds the unexpected in the established. That's how a contemporary artist can create music that will go down in history.
