Kinnie Starr

Music Indie, Hip-Hop/Rap Canada

Presented by: Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA)

Kinnie Starr is not only a fantastic singer but also a visual artist and an engaged activist. Her visual projects deal with issues like gender, home, family, and humanity. In 2016 the Canadian worked together with the director Stephanie Clattenburg in the documentary film “Play Your Gender”, which presents experiences from women in the music business and talks about the problem that only five percent of all producers are female.

In the past, Kinnie Starr was working for Cirque du Soleil, took part in the Lilith-Fair-Tour, and she was honoured as the pioneer of Canadian hip hop. This year her album “Feed The Fire” will be released. There she is reflecting on her healing process after a serious car crash, in which she suffered from brain injuries. The album with laid back vocals on the electro tracks also takes a critical look at our communication, at social media and human relations in general.
