Whispering Sons

Music / Rock, Punk / Brussels, Belgium

Post-punk experienced its peak in the nineties—or so genre veterans like to claim. Last year the Belgian band Whispering Sons proved them wrong with their debut album Image. The record is a haunting, cold trip to the early eighties, back when the post-punk guitars played choruses that sounded like a youth raised on betrayal.

The five-piece enhances this sound with dark-wave keyboards and ethereal vocals, and with elements from goth rock and shoegazing, conveying the nihilism of late-stage capitalism rather than devil worship. The band's sound is at least as dark as the legendary albums from the genre's heyday, but without being merely derivative. Whispering Sons bring back urgent, ominous-sounding rock music with a message that fits right into our time.
