XL the Band

Music / Hip-Hop/Rap, Jazz / Canada

Presented by: Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA)

Not only does XL The Band’s line-up read like an impossible super group from the future, their melting pot of styles does too: two Swollen Members, the jazz and rock multi-instrumentalist David Spidel, professional flutist Liesa Norman, Neph from the award-winning group Alpha Omega and a whole roster of guest musicians adding to the countless facets of the project’s oeuvre. Miguelito Valdes of Buena Vista Social Club, Samuel Cartwright and Aidan Miller, just to name a few, are on board as well. Together, they celebrate a combination of hip-hop, jazz, big band, breakbeats and downtempo, which has freed itself from any swag and has the audience clapping their hands and stomping their feet with no ifs or buts. Their debut album “Opus No. 1” (2020) already left nothing to be desired in this regard. Their first ever visit to Hamburg this year will see them bring brand-new material that is bound to give us an XL sized experience of the project’s trippy style fusion.
