Far away from the hype and commercial masterplans of others in the music industry, Alice Phoebe Lou has her own vision of modern songwriting. And each of her albums over the last ten years have proved that the South African vocalist can realise this vision while also continually developing her craft. From the starry sky turned into sound on “Orbit” (2016) to the lyrically multi-layered dream diary “Glow” (2021) and her half-hour concept album “Shelter” (2023), she not only successfully draws on a wealth of diverse influences - from Jeff Buckley to Lou Reed, from Angel Olsen to Bob Dylan. Her unique vocal sound, impressive range and idiosyncratic arrangements also help her tap into these sources of inspiration while never diluting her style. The fact that her compositions, like the sepia-toned witch pop of “Witches” or the surreal 1960s waltz fusion “Open My Door”, are now racking up millions of streams on the relevant platforms and her becoming a feature-page favourite can probably be seen as proof that our world as it stands is delivering at least some acts of justice. Her sixth album “Oblivion” (2025) marks the next chapter of her work, with a treasure trove of songs full of personal stories that she’s never previously put onto vinyl. You can get a first glimpse of her right where her career began: with us in Hamburg.
