Why start small when you can make it big from the word go? When Babyjoy started thinking about releasing her first songs, her brother encouraged her to make a whole EP. So that's exactly what she did. ‘Troubadour’ was released in 2021 and its smooth mix of vocals and rap was such an instant success that Ahzumjot and Badchieff, among others, came calling for features. Her brother’s rap collective BHZ is also involved and has helped the singer, rapper and actress gain a certain standing in the local hip-hop scene. But she earned this status just as much through her fantastic live performances, celebrated in clubs across the country. Songs such as ‘Ich mach es besser’ and ‘Berlin ist nicht Venedig’ (2023) showcase her skill in blending R&B, jazz, trap and conscious rap into a context that just makes sense. Whether in German, English or French, her musical vision is underpinned by accessible lyrics that allow emotion to burst forth without becoming kitsch. As a result, the EP ‘Ophelia’ (2023) presents itself as the auditory journal of a woman who is now rightly touted as the great hope of German-language rap.
