Human relationships are typically complicated and contradictory, yet sometimes also deeply fulfilling and meaningful. In his songs, Benjamin Steer incorporates the full range of the emotional rollercoaster ride we call life in a way that unlocks immediate points of identification. Somewhere between the youthful verve of Ed Sheeran, the highly melodic stomp and holler of Myles Smith and the urgent alt-pop of Thomas Day, Steer has found his style. Songs like “No One Wants To Die Alone” or “Sinner” (2024) thus lend themselves both as a soundtrack for rom-coms and for lonely bus rides home after a difficult date. As a hopeless romantic in a world where meeting people through apps has become the norm, his songs feature a certain longing as well as bitter disillusionment. But because giving up isn't an option and the British-American songwriter still believes in true love, his songs are also marked by unshakable hope. The new EP ‘Back To Me’ (2025) also radiates this optimism, and he'll no doubt use it to bring a tear to our eye in September.
