Some have musical parents who pave the way for their creativity; others attend music school or are given a violin as a gift when they start school. Nicholas Busch, aka Beslik, finds his sound, his voice, and his calling through skateboarding. At first, he uploads slick rap tracks to SoundCloud, followed by releases like the “Billigbier & Mondlicht” EP and features such as “Adlibs” (2020) with makko and “Daily” (2021) with the Austrian Bibiza. Word of the new rap talent quickly spreads far and wide. Now the major labels are also popping up in the orbit of the Düsseldorf-based artist – BMG and Atlantic are knocking on his door, wanting a piece of the pie. From then on, he confidently drops one hit after another, not only as a solo artist but also with the Boloboys at a high level. Together, they perform at the biggest hip-hop festivals in the country, racking up props and fame, defying the mainstream and the pitfalls of the game. Instead of money-grubbing rap with techno beats, however, beslik returns to his old strengths with his creative peak to date, “Songs I Wrote Instead of Jumping Out the Window” (2025): clean flow, thoughtful contemporary lyrics navigating the existential and the everyday, boom-bap beats with samples from the record collection. Hip-hop as it grew up in this country – and still sounds best.
