Intercultural understanding through music, shared in a spirit of nostalgia: given the state of the world, perhaps not the worst way out. In pursuit of this mission, Anne Tong and Bryce Barsten create sugar-sweet indie pop in English and Mandarin, which, with dreamy synth layers and catchy hooks, invites you straight onto the dance floor. As early as on their self-titled debut ‘Chinese American Bear’ (2022) four years ago, the musical duo realised this mix of styles with a playful nonchalance usually only displayed by children. But by their second album “Wah!!!” (2024) at the latest, they had developed, as a quirky Mandopop project, a musical charm that quickly won over many fans in both the US and China, online and offline alike. So far, the communication has worked out quite well. But there’s more to come: a tour in China sold out quickly last year, streams on relevant platforms have now passed the million mark, and, quite simply, things couldn’t be going much better for the couple at the moment. With fresh material such as the neo-psychedelic feel-good tracks “All The People” and “Mama”, they’ll finally be grooving their way through their stage debut here in Hamburg this September – colourful, funky and in high spirits. Just the first of many concerts, that’s for sure.
