Desiree Dorion
As a young girl, Desiree Dorion loved to ride her bike through the streets of her hometown until she reached a large square. For many years, this square has been the venue for the Dauphin Country Fest, one of Canada’s largest open-air festivals. When no one was there, Dorion would climb onto the stage and imagine herself performing her own songs in front of thousands of fans. When her dream came true in 2014, she was already an established singer–songwriter with albums such as the bittersweet autobiographical ‘Small Town Stories’ (2013) to her creative credit. Today, more than a decade later, she is part of a new generation of Indigenous artists who are proud of their heritage and incorporate it into their music. For Desiree Dorion, who belongs to the Opaskwayak Cree Nation, this is reflected in a versatile interpretation of modern country pop, which evokes romantically expansive mental images with acoustic guitar, banjo, and her powerful vocal presence. She does this brilliantly once again on her latest EP, ‘Remember Your Name’ (2024), whose songs she is also bringing with her to Hamburg.
