Having grown up in an orphanage, Dylan John Thomas didn’t have well-off parents who could afford to give him guitar lessons or a musical education during his childhood. Instead, the DIY singer–songwriter first discovered Johnny Cash through “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater” – a game that was often played in his home – and made up his mind: “I need a guitar; I want to be a musician.” What followed was a cinematic journey through Glasgow’s underground music scene and later across the whole of the UK, leading the youngster to his debut EP, “Dylan John Thomas” (2021), and from there on to his eponymous first album in 2024. “It seems to be kicking off”, the self-taught musician remarked quite modestly at the time. Indeed! And how. Whether he’s addressing his ADHD diagnosis, singing with painful beauty about the loss of a loved one, or encapsulating unrequited affection in laconic lines, Dylan John Thomas’s songs aren’t just good – they actually mean something. This is particularly palpable at the newcomer’s gigs, when the audience sings along, laughs, and cries. He’s a poet without pretension but with a big heart and a wealth of experience from which he knows how to draw with a love of detail.
