Kaïa Kater
Kaia Kater is unrivalled in her ability to combine the tonal characteristics of different musical traditions as if they were made for each other. The singer-songwriter from Montréal brings the bluegrass sound of the Appalachians up to the Canadian north and gives it a cool, soulful spirit. On the album ‘Grenades’ (2018), she managed this stylistic transfer with an ease and coherence that continues to amaze, free from the confines of contemporary trends. After six long years, she returned in 2024 with ‘Strange Medicine’, once again giving her songs a makeover: Americana elements, jazz-infused drums, folk pop and pared-down psychedelic tones now also find their way into the exceptional artist’s songwriting. Compositional twists that she has honed meticulously over the years continue to grow and naturally absorb a wide range of influences. The vigorous minimalism of Steve Reich meets the chamber orchestral scores of Jonny Greenwood and West African folklore. The result: sounds that transcend cultural boundaries.
