Stories exist so that – at best – we might find in them something like hope or inspiration, a new perspective or an unexpected thought. Dutch–Surinamese artist néomi understood this early on and expresses both hopeful perspectives and inspiring thoughts in her songs with the poetic weight of an old soul. Here, the rebellious folk songs of the late 60s blend with the dense atmosphere of contemporary singer–songwriters such as Justin Vernon and Ben Howard, whilst néomi shows no hesitation in naming and setting to music the realities of the present – whether on her brilliant first EPs or at her deeply moving concerts. By the time of the release of her debut studio album, “Somebody’s Daughter” (2024), she had attracted attention even beyond her adopted home of Amsterdam. Musically as weightless as she is melancholic, the introspective poet explores coming-of-age themes – including all their paradoxes – in songs such as “Another Year Will Pass” and “Trigger” (2025), addressing them at times biographically, at other times in a wholly universal and existential manner. As a result, néomi has now built up a similarly growing fanbase here in Germany, which is sure to welcome new members following her gig with us in September. We’re absolutely certain about that.
