The city is small, the dreams are big – and Pimf is halfway between the two. The MC from Hesse, Germany, emerged from nowhere a decade ago with his debut album, ‘Memo’ (2015), and delivered one of the most accomplished conscious rap albums of the year. Dozens of singles followed, such as the emotional ‘Wo ist die Liebe’ (2019) and the driving breakbeat banger ‘Kosmos’ (2021), all without Pimf showing a single sign of weakness. On the contrary: Together with Kico, he founded the label and collective Lagunenstyles, which has become a safe bet for exquisite German rap. EPs such as ‘Justus Jonas’ (2017) and ‘Windy City’ (2018) demonstrate a rapid development in terms of beats and lyrics, which are also becoming increasingly politicised. Because he finds the social discourse in Germany disgusting, he dropped ‘Heatcheck’ in 2021 – a scathing swan song to the AfD – and subsequently received death threats. Other topics – such as modern masculinity and mental health – are also increasingly in focus, helping Pimf to join the ranks of the greats of contemporary German rap. So, it’s high time that the language artist – who now lives in Hamburg – paid us a visit.
