The sky is as grey as concrete, battered cars lie by the roadside, teenagers seek solace in digital escapism whilst a right-wing coalition takes over the country – it’s just another Tuesday in the UK, as Pollyfromthedirt sees it. The songwriter and sound tinkerer from Darlington, UK, channels the resigned style of Elliott Smith, discovers the experimental roughness of Dean Blunt and tops it all off with porous drum machines and a captivating DIY production. It is socially critical grassroots songwriting par excellence, which he masterfully fuses with hypnagogic pop and a scathing critique of Thatcherism in tracks such as “There’s No Such Thing As England” (2025) or “When England Comes” (2026). He also expresses his deep-seated aversion to the status quo on the island with equal eloquence in his latest single “Don’t Shoot Now” (2026). A surreal and extremely idiosyncratic musician who not only ignores political and cultural conventions but deliberately attacks them. We need more of this, please.
