Sex Mask
Over the past three years, Sex Mask have been steadily building their cred in all kinds of self-empowering ways, both as accomplished punk reformers and as a pretty bonkers live act. With songs like ‘How To Be Cool At Parties’ and ‘Birds’ (2023), the Melbourne trio jockeyed their way through every radio station Down Under and ended up squarely on the most relevant playlists tagged with post-punk, industrial, goth and noise rock. While none of these terms really capture the Sex Mask sound, they do reflect the band's diverse influences. Often layered with grainy distortion, cool, groovy synths and guitars seep into a rhythmic foundation that works at any speed. Part Taoist riddle, partly manifesto for outsiders, and in the next moment a Jungian reflection on the unconscious, singer Ry Gray's lyrics are also an amalgam of inspirations. Both musically and lyrically, Sex Mask have created their own punk sound almost from scratch, earning them acclaim from SXSW in Sydney to the Great Escape Festival in the UK. If you want to see them live before the big hype, you'll have the chance in September.
