If you want to recognise and grasp her stylistically, you have to make an effort: Three years after her phenomenal debut album, ‘Lustprinzip’ (2022) (produced by none other than David Lynch’s sound supervisor Dean Hurley), Kat Koan is still a chameleon in the local music landscape. Beyond the usual fast-moving trends, the singer and songwriter has created a signature sound whose constant is constant development, the perpetual shimmering and fading of new facets. From singles such as the technoid ‘Silly Me’ (2020) to the physically grooving Kylie Minogue cover ‘Slow’ (2023) and the trip-hop homage ‘Recipe For Disaster’ (2025), the Berlin native manages every new twist in her sound with an artistic autonomy that is nothing short of impressive, even in the pulsating musical cosmos of the capital. Here, the word ‘indie’ – as in ‘independent’ – regains its original meaning. Her latest single, ‘Burned In Time’ (2025), also impressively proves that Kat Koan is one of the most unconventional and at the same time most fascinating artists of our time – comparisons excluded.
