She once aptly described her music in an interview late at night at a sausage stand: playful yet very dramatic, melancholic yet somehow danceable. Magdalena Wawra transforms the apparent contradictions in her songs into complementary strengths of captivating charm. Originally, her debut EP, ‘SO WIES GRADE IST’ (2024), consisted of bare ballads, a series of emotional dances, a soul striptease in four acts. Then, she entered her new studio and had a change of heart: Didn’t the extreme emotions with which her songs were written also deserve extreme reworking? The bare ballads are created on the piano, then given contemporary outfits in blue and green with splashes of colour and dark spots that fade in the sun. A delicate beat here, a sumptuous guitar there, and above it all, the singer-songwriter’s rough voice, marked by life. It’s driving indie pop for nights when no one dances – and yet the spirit still can’t find peace. With ‘Wie man tanzt’ (2024) and ‘Orangenbäume’ (2025), Magdalena Wawra continues to wander through waking dreams under streetlights.
